NPQLPM - Leading Primary Maths
We’re pleased to announce that we are partnering with the National Institute of Teaching to deliver the new NPQ for Leading Primary Maths.
Getting off to a strong start in numeracy is key to children achieving their potential both in later education and in the world of work. The NPQ in Leading Primary Maths is designed to help you build on the knowledge you already have as an experienced Maths teacher and will enable you to lead your colleagues to deliver this subject effectively in your primary school setting.
You will enhance your knowledge of how to develop and embed a coherent Maths curriculum, and get to grips with the nuts and bolts of what makes great teaching and leadership using deliberate practice with peers as well as guidance from expert facilitators to consolidate this learning.
In 12 months, you will gain the knowledge to become a teacher educator and successfully support teachers in your school to expand their skills.
Those doing the training will learn:
- How to develop colleagues’ Maths teaching and lesson design
- How to develop a Maths curriculum, school culture and create assessment and feedback systems
- How to support colleagues' professional development and to adapt their teaching for different pupil needs
- How to plan and deliver changes and improvements across your setting in Maths teaching and learning

Who is the NPQLPM programme for?
Teachers and leaders with responsibility for leading maths across a primary key-stage or school, or those who want to have this responsibility, who also have a secure level of understanding mastery approaches to teaching primary maths* and wish to improve leadership skills in this area.

How long does the NPQLPM programme last?
The NPQ for Leading Primary Maths is a twelve-month programme, with a mixture of live, facilitated sessions and self-directed learning.
How does the NPQLPM programme accommodate busy schedules?
The NPQ for Leading Primary Maths is designed to fit around your schedule with a 'little and often' approach that aligns with insights from the science of learning.
Is the NPQLPM programme fully funded?
For 2024-2025, the NPQ for Leading Primary Maths is fully funded for teachers and school leaders who work in eligible primary schools and organisations in England, by the Department for Education. Are there any specific requirements to enrol on the NPQLPM programme?
To be eligible for the NPQ for Leading Primary Maths, you must be a serving teacher in a school or eligible organisation in England and have completed your early career training.
Teachers and leaders should have a secure level of understanding mastery approaches to teaching primary maths and wish to improve leadership skills in this area. This should come through a minimum of 1 year's participation of the Maths Hubs Teaching for Mastery programme, or a programme equivalent

Curriculum
Our NPQ for Leading Primary Maths course follows the Department for Education’s National Professional Qualification: Early Years Leadership Framework.
You will learn how to:
- Develop colleagues’ Maths teaching and lesson design
- Develop and implement a coherent Maths curriculum that supports pupils’ long term learning in Maths
- Develop a school culture where staff and pupils have a positive attitude to Maths
- Lead a culture of professional learning and continuous improvement for colleagues
- Support colleagues to adapt their teaching for different pupil needs
- Create assessments and feedback systems that enable colleagues to know the next steps to be successful in teaching Maths to their pupils
- Plan and deliver changes and improvements across your setting in Maths teaching and learning

How you'll learn
Our NPQLPM is designed so you can engage in live, facilitated sessions alongside modules you can complete at any time.
Over 12 months, our NPQLPM includes:

Local seminars: extend your learning with an expert, school leader facilitator, build your network and apply your learning to your own context.

Virtual school visits: visit some of the country’s leading schools, learning about how they have developed and improved their practice over time to deliver exceptional outcomes and experiences for young people.

Online masterclasses: hear school-based sector experts sharing best practice from their context and experience.

Online practice clinics: apply your learning to scenarios and to your own context, trouble-shooting with an expert school-based practice lead.

Online self-studies: learn cutting-edge research and how it is being applied successfully in schools.
The content is delivered through blended learning. This includes 12 hours of in-person delivery (via 2 full day conferences and in-person twilight sessions),a mix of real-time, interactive online sessions and self-guided modules you complete in your own time.
The programme includes facilitator-led sessions with your peer group that focus on decision-making. The programme starts with a one-day live conference.

Time Commitment
On average, participants will spend between one and two hours a week working towards the NPQLPM. Where possible, study should be done in dedicated career-development time during school hours.

Assessment
In order to receive NPQLPM accreditation, participants will need to complete the programme and achieve a pass mark in a written, ‘open book’ style, structured assessment of up to 1,500 words.
We will support participants with writing clinics before they embark on gaining their accreditation.
The assessment itself takes place over an eight-day window. There are two assessment windows per year and participants have two opportunities to take part.

Funding
NEW for autumn 2024! Department for Education NPQ scholarship funding is available for this NPQ to all publicly funded schools and 16 to 19 educational organisations in England.
DfE-funded scholarships are available for this NPQ for all those who meet the following criteria:
- Teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading primary mathematics teaching across a school, key stage or phase.
- Be familiar with mastery approaches to teaching maths or be a subject leader in a primary school which is already engaged in the Teaching for Mastery programme or a similar programme.
We are expecting more details from the DfE in the summer on the practical arrangements on how funding will work, and will update this page as soon as we have this. In the meantime you can find the DfE messaging here.

Register your interest now for NPQs starting in the Autumn term (October 2024).
The DfE have capped funded places - we have a set number of places with each of our Lead Providers. To increase the likelihood of you successfully securing a scholarship-funded (fully-funded) place, please use our Register Your Interest form to tell us you want to apply, and we will advise you which Lead Provider programme to choose during your DfE registration.
Once you have heard from us regarding which Lead Provider to choose, register here with the DfE.
NPQs are not suitable for active Early Career Teachers.
To apply, you must be a teacher who has, or is aspiring to have, responsibilities for primary leading teaching in mathematics, numeracy, curriculum, teaching and learning, phase or a primary classroom teacher aspiring to lead.
This course could be suitable if you’re a:
- Primary teacher and you’re already familiar with mastery approaches to teaching maths, but you want to improve your leadership skills in this area.
- Subject leader in a primary school which is already engaged in the Teaching for Mastery programme or a similar programme.
- Phase leader in an all-through school with responsibility for educating a primary aged key-stage or primary school
For example, you might be a:
- Primary Mathematics Lead
- Primary Numeracy Lead
- Primary Curriculum Lead
- Primary Teaching and Learning Lead
- Primary Phase Lead
- Primary classroom teacher aspiring to lead mathematics.
NPQLPM participants are expected to have completed a minimum of 1 Year of the DfE's Teaching for Mastery programme, delivered by the national network of Maths Hubs and co-ordinated by NCETM, or have secure mastery expertise from another equivalent programme.
Teacher Reference Number
To apply for an NPQ, you will need a Teacher Reference Number (TRN). If you do not have a TRN, you can request a temporary one. You can find out how to do that here.
